The Department of Art is located on the campus in Altea, University Miguel Hernandez de Altea and coordinates the teaching and research of those professors assigned to the domains of Painting, Sculpture, Art History and Aesthetics.

Currently, our professors teach in the degrees Bachelor of Fine Arts (Campus in Altea), Audiovisual Communication (Campus in Elche) and the Master’s of Project and Research in Art (Campus in Altea), offering students a learning experience based on interdisciplinarity, hybridization and crossbreeding of different visual and / or art languages.

Integrated in the Department are four research groups that span (1) the study of support beyond the traditional techniques; (2) transdisciplinary research of the relationship between art, culture, technology and education; (3) status analysis of image functions; and (4) the study of relations between categories that generate social identities with their tight, preset relationships such as vision in visual culture.

The research in the Art Department is structured around four research groups:

Altea

In the beginning of the 20th century, Valencian painters such as Genaro Lahuerta, Joaquin Mompó and Genaro Palau were already depicting the peculiar landscape around Altea, which also left an impression on writers and travellers alike going back to the eighteenth century. Since then many artists have chosen Altea as their residence, endowing it with a certain bohemian aura, mainly during the seventies, when Benjamin Palencia, Eberhard Schlotter, Toni Miró and many others before them left their mark on the town decorating the interior and exterior of houses and restaurants, painting frescos on the street or making posters for local festivals. This heritage is maintained in the large number of galleries, studios and workshops, exhibition spaces, handicrafts trade fairs, foundations, museums, such as the Palace and the Faculty of Fine Arts of the University Miguel Hernández. For many it is not only a question of the landscape or the characteristic environment that represents the town and the bay, but a special light, the light of Altea.
